On August 25, 2026 NTA opened prequalification for the metro's Infra 2 tender, the package covering the trains, systems and operation of the network. It is valued at about NIS 30 billion (roughly $10 billion).
In a first for Israel, trains will run without drivers under the GoA4 standard, the highest level of automation currently used in rail. The winners will be responsible for station and tunnel fit-out, track, electromechanical systems, signalling and train control, rolling stock, depots, and operating and maintaining the network for 15 to 20 years.
Because autonomous systems are sensitive, international bidders will be required to partner with Israeli cybersecurity firms to guard against intrusion and interference. The deadline for prequalification applications is January 18, 2027.
The network will comprise three underground lines totalling about 150 km and 109 stations: M1 (about 85 km, 62 stations), M2 (about 25 km, 22 stations) and M3 (about 39 km, 25 stations), with expected capacity of around 600 million passengers a year.
